Artist Biography

I paint how I feel. Passionately.
— Pamela M. Julian

Growing up in the Brandywine Valley, Pamela Julian-Smyers always felt a kinship to artists, connecting with the need to create, to express her inner emotions, and to stir the emotions of others.

“I grew up surrounded by Andrew Wyeth’s paintings, always pondering their hidden meanings. The stylized paintings of Gustav Klimt, the starkness of Georgia O’Keefe, and the symbolism of Frida Kahlo have also been my inspiration.  I am inspired by women in the arts and admire their spiritual strength.”

Pamela continues to be fascinated by spirit and feels it is the driving force behind her work.  She paints symbolic representations of experiences and emotions. "I find beauty in everything," She says.  This allows for her subject matter to be diverse.  She chooses subjects to represent the extremes in life while striving to evoke emotions and to connect with the viewer.  Pamela finds her peace immersed in nature, gardening, and wildlife.

Pamela's medium of choice is acrylic paint on wood panels but occasionally paints on canvas.  She enjoys lightly stippling (layering) washes of color on top of one another as to allow all the applied colors to emerge. Pamela studied under Karl Kuerner, a Brandywine Valley Artist who has studied with Carolyn Wyeth and mentored by Andrew Wyeth.

Pamela has held art workshops for children at multiple locations including Gallery One in Glen Mills, PA. She is currently represented by various galleries in Pennsylvania and has exhibited work in galleries and juried exhibitions throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware.  She lives in Glen Mills, PA with her husband, two daughters, and one nutty little dog.
